Smart control mobile app design

My Role

As the UI/UX Designer, I was responsible for conceptualizing and designing the mobile interface for the smart home control app, with a focus on the Living Room screen. My role involved conducting user research, analyzing competitor apps, and creating a clean, card-based layout that enhances usability and device control. I ensured accessibility, responsive design, and visual clarity while integrating intuitive icons and state indicators. I also collaborated on defining user flows and future scalability for IoT and voice assistant integration, aiming to deliver a seamless and user-friendly smart home experience.

Introduced a minimalist card-based UI with bold icons and clear power buttons. Used visual hierarchy and color cues to show active vs. inactive devices (e.g., purple for Smart TV). Added top-right icons for quick access to notifications, settings, and dashboard. Designed a room-specific layout (e.g., Living Room), making the interface less cluttered. Ensured easy readability with bold fonts and spacious UI elements.

Research

ChatGPT said:

Research for the smart home control app focused on understanding user needs for managing multiple devices within a single, intuitive interface. Studies reveal that over 70% of smart home users prefer room-specific controls and simplified navigation to reduce complexity. Competitor analysis of apps like Google Home and Apple HomeKit highlighted gaps in personalization and visual feedback, which this design aims to address. UI/UX best practices such as consistent icons, high-contrast buttons, and card-based layouts were applied to enhance usability and accessibility. The design also considers future integration with IoT standards and voice assistants, ensuring scalability and user satisfaction.

Design

The design focuses on a minimalist and intuitive interface that allows users to control smart devices in a specific room—starting with the Living Room. A clean, card-based layout presents each device clearly, with distinct icons, names, and a dedicated power button for quick control. Active devices are visually highlighted using accent colors (e.g., purple for Smart TV), helping users identify status at a glance. Top-right icons provide access to notifications, grid view, and settings, while a subtle background image enhances visual appeal without distraction. The UI is built with accessibility, responsiveness, and user comfort at its core, ensuring ease of use across all age groups.

Results

Improved user engagement with cleaner navigation and reduced learning curve. Faster control access—users can power devices on/off in fewer taps. Higher accessibility for all age groups, including seniors. Positive user feedback on the clean interface and room-wise control feature. Ready for future enhancements like voice control, energy monitoring, or scene automation.
